California Love combines recognizable symbols of love and geometrical techniques of surface generation to create a visceral cavern housing a throne of a bed. The outlines of the heart-like shapes determine the shape of the interior space. Since one heart is upside-down, the space changes from one side to the other, resolving the differences between the two hearts in a smooth transitional space.

The inner crease of the upright heart acts as an imposing overhead continuous pendant, which smooths out into a flat ceiling over the length of the space. Upon entry, the user is in a compressed space, with a low ceiling and a single path leading to the bed. As the user walks toward the bed, the walkway narrows and the ceiling height increases, inverting the spatial dynamic from one side of the room to the other. The overhead heavy mass becomes a rising floor. As the spatial pressure decreases, the space expands, and the floor rises as the bed throne is approached.

In this way, California Love combines a simple, quotidian symbol with the principles of geometry and the psychology of interior space, imbuing a short passageway with complexity and emotion. A symbol becomes a space, and the experience of that space becomes a narrative journey through the meaning of that symbol.
